Fences can block wind on a deck, provide privacy for social gatherings and prevent individuals from falling off of a raised deck. However, deck fencing can also serve a decorative purpose and give your deck a highly unusual, customized look. Homeowners have many choices when it comes to deck fencing, so there should be options that fit most budgets and landscape design schemes.

Wood Handrail

Many appreciate the natural look and versatility of wood fencing for their decks. Wood may be carved into custom shapes or combined with other materials, such as metal or glass, for an individualized look. In addition, a wooden deck fence may be painted or stained so homeowners can achieve the precise color that they desire for their fencing. However, a wooden deck fence requires a great deal of maintenance. Painted or stained decks may need to be touched up every few years, and sealant should be reapplied as well. Pressure treated lumber should be used for deck fencing, so it is better able to withstand moisture damage. Should warping, splitting or rotting occur with wooden deck fencing, parts of the fence may need to be replaced when it becomes unsafe. Wooden deck fencing is typically the least expensive type of fencing, so it may be best for homeowners on a budget.

Composite Materials

For homeowners who enjoy the look of wood but prefer a more durable fencing option, a composite fence may be the best choice for their deck. Composite fences are made from a combination of plastic and wood materials, so they have the appearance of wood but are longer lasting and require less maintenance. They are also not prone to the same problems that plague wooden deck fences, such as warping, rotting or insect infestations. Composite fences come in a variety of colors and styles, so they can be customized to match a home's architecture or design style.

Vinyl is a highly durable option for a deck fence. It requires much less maintenance than wood fencing and is not prone to fading, scratches, warping, rotting or insect infestations. However, vinyl deck fencing typically comes in kits, so design and color options may be limited. In addition, it is one of the most expensive fencing options for decks, so it may not be a good option for homeowners on a budget.

Tempered Glass Fence

For a funky, modern look, homeowners can opt for a deck fence made of tempered glass panels. These fences are essentially invisible but can block the wind and serve as a safety railing to prevent individuals from falling off a raised deck. Glass panel fences can be costly, depending on the size of the fence. The glass panels are usually held between metal or wood fence posts but easily can be removed if they need to be repaired or replaced.
